JOB DESCRIPTION:

NORC at the University of Chicago is seeking qualified Research Methodologists to support the Center for Excellence in Survey Research.

DEPARTMENT: Center for Excellence in Survey Research

CESR helps identify and share best practices—both internally and externally—across the continuum of research design and implementation at NORC. To accomplish its mission, the Center conducts timely, state-of-the-art statistical and methodological research on sample and survey design and estimation methods, as well as the analysis of data from surveys and information collection activities. The CESR staff partner with colleagues and work on projects housed in every research department at NORC to encourage including the most innovative and industry best practices in our methodologies. External clients benefit from CESR’s team members’ expertise across a range of topics by working directly with CESR or through a multidisciplinary collaboration with NORC’s research departments.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Providing technical advice on statistical and methodological issues to Project Directors and Task Leaders
  • Under the direction of senior staff, assuming responsibility for day-to-day project activities, including: survey implementation/production activities, preparing or reviewing deliverables, sample management tasks, monitoring task budget and schedule, resolving technical and management problems, and communicating with the client and subcontractor(s)
  • Serving as an internal consultant on survey design issues, as requested by the Project Director or Task Leader
  • Authoring sections of technical reports, methodology reports, proposals, and other documentary deliverables
  • Designing, conducting, analyzing and preparing reports on experimental/methodological studies
  • Conducting substantive analysis under direction of Principal Investigator or other analyst
  • Leading or contributing to questionnaire evaluation, design, and testing tasks
  • Presenting research papers at professional conferences, and submitting articles for publication in journals
REQUIRED SKILLS:
  • Master’s degree in statistics or social sciences, or a Bachelor’s degree with equivalent experience in survey research or related field
  • At least 3 years’ experience related to statistics and/or survey methodologies
  • Knowledge of the principles, processes, and methods of survey research through reading in the literature and/or experience in the field or classroom
  • General familiarity with social science research and policy issues
  • Skills in the use of computer software, especially packages for statistical analysis (SAS, Stata, R, or SPSS) and knowledge of computing platforms and data file construction
  • Strong skills in quantitative analysis, qualitative research, writing, problem identification and resolution, task management, and interpersonal communications
  • Skills in supervision, leadership, team building, time management, personal organization, and setting priorities to meet all project, proposal, and administrative needs in a timely fashion are expected
