NORC at the University of Chicago is seeking Senior Statisticians to join our Statistics and Methodology department.
|DEPARTMENT: STATISTICS & METHODOLOGY
The Statistics and Methodology department pioneers innovations in survey research, analytics, and data science. We work in collaboration with all NORC subject area departments, while also conducting our own industry research. In the survey research arena, members of our team help understand the cognitive processes underlying respondents’ reactions to surveys; design and implement rigorous, efficient methods for sampling from populations and weighting resultant survey data; and employ advanced techniques for analyzing and interpreting survey and secondary data. NORC statisticians utilize a broad range of analytic methods such as predictive modeling, survival analysis, item response theory, latent variable analysis, small area estimation, GIS/spatial analysis, psychometrics, and econometrics in deriving insights from data. NORC data scientists apply advanced techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing, data linkage, data visualization, network analysis, optimization, simulation, and parallel processing in working with large and multiple datasets.
- Write and implement computer programs to extract and manipulate data, make statistical calculations necessary for selecting samples, and perform other statistical analyses
- Discuss and provide specifications for the construction of data files from which samples are drawn and from which variances, statistical weights, and standard errors are calculated
- Perform quality control to ensure the accuracy of deliverables; contribute to and review the sampling and analytic sections of reports, final technical reports, and other deliverables
- Work with the client on sampling and other statistical issues, provide technical information on the types of analyses, limitations of the data, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of various strategies
- Calculate weights, non-response rates, and standard error estimates as part of documenting sample selection and implementation; carry out substantive analysis on projects with analytical deliverables
- Manage, analyze, and interpret data to provide insights into important business issues
- Perform statistical analyses, including developing and implementing predictive models
- Master’s or PhD degree in statistics, social sciences, or other quantitative program, or a Bachelor’s degree with equivalent experience in statistics, survey research, or related quantitative field
- Ability to apply knowledge to quickly troubleshoot issues
- Knowledge of the methods, principles, and processes of survey research and broad experience in the field
- Strong skills in quantitative analysis. Statistical modelling experience including logistic regression with random effects, machine learning, and small area estimation
- Expert skills in the use of computer software, especially packages for statistical analysis.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to quickly understand, communicate and troubleshoot issues
- Strong interpersonal and time management skills.
- General familiarity with social science research and policy issues
- Excellent quality control skills.
