NORC at the University of Chicago is currently seeking experienced Field Managers to support a variety of client data collection projects.
Field Managers manage a team of Field Interviewers on an assigned project and are responsible for all project field data collection tasks within a geographical region. Field Managers are often called upon to assist with interviewer recruiting tasks, train field interviewers, write and review project materials, lead troubleshooting teams, mentor the interviewing staff and to complete other relevant tasks as directed by the Regional Manager. This position reports administratively to a Regional Manager (RM). While working on a project, the Field Manager will report to a Field Project Manager (FPM) or the project's Data Collection Task Leader.
NORC field interviewers are vital to our nationwide survey research operation. We talk to people from every conceivable walk of life in person to obtain information on issues such as health care, employment, and education. The interview is the basic tool by which we are able to provide this data and as the interviewer, you’ll have the ability to make that possible.

- Supervise Field Interviewers and their data collection activities, including weekly calls in which cost and production are reported and discussed;
- Manage all project field data collection tasks within a geographical region;
- Provide guidance when problems arise; interpret and clarify data collection procedures;
- Develop strategies during field period to include overall fielding plans, travel, cost and production and project shutdown. Assign and re-assign (or re-distribute) cases to interviewing staff;
- Motivate field interviewers; and make data driven decisions using a variety of reports produced from CM Field;
- Give work related performance and quality feedback to interviewing staff;
- Conduct Field interviewer training including telephone training, in-person training, refresher training during project, and other training deemed necessary by project.
- Assist with interviewer recruiting tasks, writing and reviewing project materials, mentoring of the interviewing staff and other relevant tasks as directed by the Regional Manager
- Occasionally serve as an interviewer, with responsibilities including but not limited to gaining cooperation from groups of respondents (i.e. school personnel), listing segments, conducting interviews, and other additional tasks required by a project.
- Field management experience with research and/or survey organization preferred. Other relevant work experience with customer service, marketing research, retail sales, etc. also considered.
- Strong supervisory knowledge and skills;
- Ability to evaluate cost and production data and take appropriate action when necessary;
- Ability to conduct case by case reviews and offer solutions during field period;
- Strong skills in time management, personal organization, and setting of priorities to meet all project needs in a timely fashion.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills both in person and on the telephone;
- Strong skills in problem and conflict resolution and the ability to handle multiple, conflicting responsibilities;
- Basic knowledge of the principles, processes, and methods of survey research for in person, phone, and multimode data collection
- Strong skills in Field interviewing, locating, gaining cooperation, refusal conversion, securing institutional cooperation and making plans for staff that will travel;
- Skills in the use of computer software, including Microsoft Office, survey programs and a case management system and an ability to quickly grasp new computer systems;
- High school diploma required; college degree in social sciences or related field preferred; A minimum of two years’ experience in social science research required.
- A Field Manager may not work for a direct competitor during the time they are managing a project for NORC as a regular status employee.
- Candidates must have access to high speed internet coverage and a working phone number in home offices.
- Able to attend in-person, paid trainings (no exceptions).
- We require: a valid driver’s license, proof of auto liability insurance and unlimited use of an automobile in good working condition; and ability to carry a laptop computer and survey documents and supplies due to the fact this position may sometimes need to travel locally for trainings and staff support.
