The Enterprise Architect is a senior level technology position that will interact with many levels both within the IT organization and with NORC’s business units. The EA is expected to demonstrate expertise in multiple IT disciplines, and to gain expertise in NORC’s IT systems and our core business of social science research.  The position requires coordination, high-level review, planning, and recommendation across multiple systems and infrastructure interdependencies to ensure alignment with our business and technology strategies.  This individual will define the architectural strategy for our suite of products and work collaboratively across all functional departments.  This position resides in our Chicago, IL location.

  • Develop and maintain a current and planned state architectural road map
  • Understand and capture business needs to ensure alignment of IT strategy with NORC’s business goals
  • Translate project and product requirements into system level architecture and high-level designs
  • Analyze architectural and security risks and propose short, mid and long-term solutions
  • Communicate architectural decisions, plans, goals and strategies across the organization
  • Present, educate, and promote system architecture across Engineering and Software Development departments
  • Assist with evolving process maturity and process documentation
  • Work with senior technology leaders to propose technical solutions and define technology roadmap
  • Create an annual architectural maturity assessment report
  • Work with internal and external customers on technical solutions
  • Review, approve and collaborate on proposed solutions to ensure appropriate design, security, and scalability within project and capacity constraints
  • Write documentation to guide IT staff on approach of specific implementations
  • Assist with NORC business proposal IT solutions, both written text and associated work effort estimation
  • Assist in product evaluations and ROI analysis
  • Maintain knowledge of and seek to understand current trends in new technology


  • Ability to assess and understand the impact of technical decisions and architectural changes

  • 10+ years of experience with analysis, design, implementation, and support of large-scale systems
  • 10+ years of development experience with OO languages (e.g. Java, C#), relational databases, and security models and frameworks for application and system design
  • Demonstrated progression with IT architecture experience from application to solution to enterprise level
  • Experience with software development life cycle methodologies (e.g., Agile, Waterfall)
  • Applied experience using EA Frameworks (e.g., TOGAF, FEAF, etc.)
  • Experience with communicating and promoting the value of EA across an organization
  • Experience with business re-engineering principles and processes
  • Experience with Microsoft technology platforms and tools
  • Proven understanding and experience of good business analysis practices, standards and methodologies


  • BS/MS degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science or Mathematics a plus
  • Enterprise Architect related certification and/or training a plus
  • Project management skills and PMP certification a plus
