NORC at the University of Chicago’s Education and Child Development Department is seeking a talented Survey Specialist to work on a variety of challenging, interesting, innovative multi-year data collection and analysis projects. This job focuses on the operational side of survey data collection projects.
The Survey Specialist is responsible for supporting small and large-scale survey collections, technical assistance, and evaluation projects for a variety of clients. The role requires expertise related to operational methods, including project design, data collection procedures, data management and processing, and data analysis.
While our main office locations are in Chicago, IL and Bethesda, MD, we will consider qualified candidates who prefer to work remotely.
|DEPARTMENT: EDUCATION AND CHILD DEVELOPMENT

Our department of Education and Child Development is a leader in conducting research and evaluations as well as large national surveys. We conduct both formative as well as experimental and quasi-experimental summative studies, conduct sophisticated analysis utilizing data science techniques, and provide comprehensive technical assistance to education decision makers and practitioners.
- Prepare survey contact materials; contribute to methodological and production reports; and write detailed training and reference documents
- Develop survey instrument specifications and test survey systems
- Monitor data collection productivity and quality through development of quantitative reports and ad hoc analyses, including summary tables, graphs, and text
- Plan and provide support for trainings of interviewers and other production support staff
- Support data analysis and products
- Organize project meetings and take minutes
- Work in teams to problem solve various data collection process issues
- Serve as interdepartmental liaison between the functional groups of Survey Operations, Information Technology, the Field and/or Production Centers
- Execute other duties as assigned
- Bachelors' degree in the social sciences or related field (Masters' degree preferred)
- At least 1 year of experience in a social science research environment (including internships)
- Background in survey research preferred
- Experience with quantitative analysis using SAS, SPSS, R preferred
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, especially Access
- Understanding of systems design and implementation
- Knowledge of data collection and data flow processes
- Must have effective verbal and written communication skills
- Must be able to work collaboratively as part of a team
- Solid organizational skills with ability to multi-task, strong attention to detail
