NORC at the University of Chicago is seeking a talented Research Director to support the Health Sciences Research Department in our Chicago, IL office.
This position is responsible for managing discrete tasks of complex projects including survey work, technical assistance, strategy and research and/or smaller research projects in their entirety, including responsibility for the schedule, budget, staff and client relations; requires limited expertise related to operational methods, including project design, appropriate data collection procedures, data management and quality control.

NORC’s Health Sciences staff produce rich data on health care priorities including the uses of electronic clinical data in research, and the applications and effectiveness of health information technology.
Our expert staff evaluates the effectiveness of federal investments in informatics, supports the emerging fields of patient-centered outcomes research and mobile health. The staff also work on large implementation science projects involving patient safety and quality.
NORC’s Health Sciences staff work closely with colleagues in Health Care and Public Health to offer program, policy, and research solutions. - Serve as task/component manager on projects
- Manage the day-to-day performance of all members of the task/component team and may have administrative supervisory responsibilities
- Supervise the design of or designs data collection methodologies and procedures, questionnaires, and data collection forms to implement the study as specified by the client and the project director, or supervises the organization of secondary data (reports from the field, program records transferred from the client, social media data acquisition, etc.) including implementing an organized record keeping system.
- Interact with clients to clarify their needs, report on progress, discuss contractual matters, resolve problems, allay concerns, and provide information and recommendations.
- Ensure and manage staff mentorship, technical and professional assistance, and other feedback on performance of project/task team members.
- Engage in business development activities including authoring various sections of the technical proposal.
- Reviewing project deliverables and ensuring quality control, including in some instances auditing and correcting the data files, ensuring management of grantee data, or overseeing data acquisition protocols with fidelity.
- Bachelor’s degree in social sciences or related field, Master’s degree preferred
- At least 4 years’ experience in positions of increasing responsibility in survey, research or related field.
- Some experience in client communications and relationship management.
- Strong proficiency with MS Office software; knowledge of analysis packages, computing platforms, data processing procedures, and data file construction as appropriate.
