NORC at the University of Chicago, a premier research institution working in the U.S. and abroad, seeks a Senior Visual Designer to play a key role in the execution and development of the organization’s brand and creative direction. The Sr. Visual Designer will aid in maintaining creative integrity across NORC’s rich eco-system of touchpoints, from print to digital deliverables to every brand expression in between. We are seeking a creative problem solver who enjoys a vast range of design challenges from brand systems thinking to information design, to creative concepting and compelling visual storytelling. An individual who will model a high standard of design principles, user-centered thinking, and creativity to help create a culture at NORC that values excellence in all aspects of design processes, presentation, internal communications, public delivery and brand awareness.  

At a time where trustworthy data is needed more than ever, this work would extend NORC’s mission to ensure that the organization’s research insights are as effective as possible in informing the most critical decisions facing societies today and beyond.


Strategic Communications and External Affairs supports the entire NORC organization with expertise in corporate communications and creative services, external affairs, internal communications, and project-level communications. We help promote NORC to the public: we work with members of the media to publicize our research projects and our expertise; we support external events where NORC experts present or speak; we publish NORC’s annual report; we maintain the external NORC website,; and we manage NORC’s social media presence on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter.

  • Lead designer in the creation and execution of various visual solutions across the organization’s brand ecosystem, working closely with the Creative Director in the development and alignment of brand standards and best practices
  • Concept, creation, and design consulting for NORC’s projects and deliverables, producing visually compelling, thoughtful materials of the highest caliber for both internal and external audiences
  • Manage creative vendors, including printers, photographers, and videographers etc. ensuring deliverables are met following brand and production standards
  • Functions as a subject-matter expert on topics of visual design, art direction, typography, color, information design, accessibility, 508 Compliance, branding and production management
  • Will work with colleagues in Communications and other departments to elevate communications and design systems across NORC
  • Will promote design best practices and collaborate with other producers and publishers throughout NORC in creating deliverables of the highest creative quality
  • At least 7 years of experience in positions in visual design, creative direction, or related field
  • Bachelor’s degree in design, communications, art, or related field
  • Ability to manage time to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Effectively presents ideas/concepts and effective interpersonal skills in collaborating with the Strategic Communications team, and interfacing with multiple departments, stakeholders and internal clients.
  • Intellectual curiosity, independent self-starter, detail-oriented
  • Strong hands on experience with latest creative tools and applications, (Ie. Adobe Creative Suite) and ability to identify best tool sets for different creative challenges
  • Strong design sensibilities in typography, information design, composition/layouts, critiquing, brainstorming, concepting, photography art direction
  • Infographics and data viz (print or interactive)
  • Illustration, fine art, photography and other creative talents
  • UI/UX Digital interface design experience
