Graduate Research Assistant II - NSHAP

The National Social Life Health and Aging Project (NSHAP) is seeking qualified graduate research assistants. NSHAP is a longitudinal, population-based study of health and social factors. The project examines the well-being of older, community-dwelling Americans using interview and biological data on multiple domains including physical morbidities, medication use, cognitive function, emotional health, sensory function, health behaviors, sexuality, relationship satisfaction, and social connectedness. The interdisciplinary investigator team consists of faculty from: the Departments of Sociology, Health Studies, Human Development, and Psychology; the Departments of Geriatrics and Internal Medicine at the Pritzker School of Medicine; and the Harris School of Public Policy Studies. Housed within NORC and funded by the National Institute on Aging, NSHAP provides policy makers, health providers, and individuals with useful information on new ways to improve health as people age.

As a condition of employment, all NORC employees and contractors – including those working remotely - must be fully vaccinated (as defined by current CDC guidance) against COVID-19.

DEPARTMENT: Academic Research Centers

The Academic Research Centers (ARC) is a community of researchers and programs covering a variety of substantive domains and exemplifying NORC’s commitment to the highest standards of academic excellence and research innovation. The ARC brings substantive expertise and collaborative infrastructure to theoretically driven and multimodal research. The ARC collaborates with multi-disciplinary research from the University of Chicago and other research institutions by collecting, analyzing, and disseminating data; providing methodological and statistical expertise; and facilitating pre- and post-award management. ARC’s research staff works jointly with social scientists, physicians, and other experts in an open, cooperative working environment.


Graduate Research Assistants provide statistical support including data management, cleaning, and analysis. Students interested in using the NSHAP Waves 1,2, and 3 data for a master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • Enrolled full-time in MA or PhD program in a relevant field including—but not limited to—sociology, public policy, statistics, health studies, human development, biology, public policy
  • Excellent academic record with coursework in statistics, mathematics, social or computer science, or computer science
  • Academic or professional experience performing data analysis using a statistical computer package such as SAS, STATA, SPSS, R, or Mplus
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Power Point, and Access
  • Willingness to learn new computer skills and computer-based data analysis (e.g., EndNote)
  • Outstanding interpersonal, critical reasoning, analytic, and writing skills
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently on multiple projects
  • Comfort dealing with sensitive subject matter (e.g., sexuality, HIV/AIDS, etc.)
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and the highest standards of responsible research.
