JOB DESCRIPTION:

NORC at the University of Chicago is seeking a Communications Assistant, to join the Bethesda team. 

As a member of NORC’s Strategic Communications and External Affairs team, work directly with the vice president of communications and corporate communications colleagues to support a variety of strategic communications campaigns within the organization and externally.  

Gain exposure working on a variety of projects across different areas while performing daily tasks and advancing both the department’s and the company’s goals. Leverage your creativity, organizational abilities, and outstanding verbal and written communications skills to deliver best-in-class communications strategies and tactics in coordination with the team. This role provides opportunities for professional growth and development, as well as visibility to many of NORC’s departments and teams. 

DEPARTMENT: STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS AND EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

Strategic Communications and External Affairs supports the entire NORC organization with expertise in corporate communications and creative services, external affairs, internal communications, and project-level communications. 

We help promote NORC to the public: we work with members of the press to publicize our research projects and our expertise; we support external events where NORC experts present or speak; we lead and support staff communications and engagement; we maintain the external NORC website, www.norc.org; and we manage NORC’s social media presence. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Source, write, design, proofread, edit, and post content for a variety of internal and external communications channels under the general supervision of senior staff, including external affairs, staff communications and events, external conferences, digital content, and more.  

  • Assist in the coordination of a variety of communications projects, including participation in timeline, budget, and content management activities.  

  • Support coordination and logistics for professional conferences and meetings.  

  • Identify and recommend improvements to organization and department communication processes, systems, and messaging based on best practices in strategic communications. 

  • Assist in creation and analysis of communications metrics and reports.  

  • Perform administrative tasks including scheduling meetings, processing invoices, and supporting the department, as needed and appropriate. 

  • Work closely with communications colleagues and stakeholders throughout the organization as needed and appropriate. 

  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

REQUIRED SKILLS:
  • Bachelor's Degree or commensurate experience in the field.

  • 1 year of relevant work or internship experience.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills including active listening, verbal, and written communication. 

  • Strong writing and editing skills; social media, design, and presentation experience is a plus. 

  • Demonstrated organizational and coordination abilities.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with strong performance/results.

  • High attention to detail, especially around branding, design, consistent formatting, and deliverable timeliness.

  • Must be a team player with a commitment to a collaborate work environment.

  • Capable and eager to work effectively with multiple departments, stakeholders, and internal clients; and ability to work with multiple layers of the organization (including C-level executives).

  • Exceptional computer skills with expertise in Microsoft Office programs.

  • Familiarity with Adobe Create Suite, AEM, HTML, SharePoint a plus.
