Research Director I - Health Sciences - Hybrid

JOB DESCRIPTION:

NORC at the University of Chicago is seeking a talented Research Director I to support the Health Sciences Research Department. 

This position is responsible for managing discrete tasks of complex projects including survey work, study management systems design, technical assistance, strategy and research and/or smaller research projects in their entirety, including responsibility for the schedule, budget, staff and client relations; requires limited expertise related to operational methods, including project  design, appropriate data collection procedures, data management and quality control. 

Preferably applicants will be based in either our Chicago, IL or Bethesda, MD offices with a hybrid office/work from home schedule. We are also open to applicants working remotely. 

DEPARTMENT: Health Sciences

The Health Sciences team is versatile and experienced in data acquisition, management, technical assistance, and analysis; the use of information technology in health care; and numerous data collection methods. Our track record of leadership and innovation includes the design and management of large-scale surveys, including extensive experience collecting bio measures. 

NORC’s Health Sciences staff work closely with colleagues in Health Care and Public Health to offer program, policy, and research solutions. RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Serve as task/component manager on projects  
  • Manage the day-to-day performance of all members of the task/component team and may have administrative supervisory responsibilities 
  • Supervise the design of or designs data collection methodologies and procedures, questionnaires, and data collection forms to implement the study as specified by the client and the project director or supervises the organization of secondary data (reports from the field, program records transferred from the client, social media data acquisition, etc.) including implementing an organized record keeping system.  
  • Develops plans and materials for interviewer trainings and data collection efforts 
  • Monitor data collection productivity and quality through development of basic quantitative reports and ad hoc analyses, including summary tables, graphs, and text 
  • Interact with clients to clarify their needs, report on progress, discuss contractual matters, resolve problems, allay concerns, and provide information and recommendations. 
  • Ensure and manage staff mentorship, technical and professional assistance, and other feedback on performance of project/task team members. 
  • Engage in business development activities including authoring various sections of the technical proposal. 
REQUIRED SKILLS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, public health or related field, Master’s degree preferred 
  • At least 3 years’ experience in positions of increasing responsibility in survey research or related field 
  • Experience in client communications and relationship management 
  • Experience with interviewer training and data collection  
  • Must have experience managing and mentoring staff. 
  • Strong analytic ability, writing and organizational skills are required 
  • Strong proficiency with MS Office software; knowledge of analysis packages, computing platforms, data processing procedures, and data file construction as appropriate. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills 
  • Strong writing skills 
  • Occasional travel for site visits and meetings may be required.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

The pay range for this position is $70,000 to $96,000.  

This position is classified as regular. Regular staff are eligible for NORC’s comprehensive benefits program. Benefits include, but are not limited to:
